Planning a boiler replacement: questions to ask

AI test image: heating engineer repairing a domestic boiler

When you are considering a boiler replacement, the first conversation is a chance to explain what you need from the project. It also helps you understand how the work would fit around your home and routine.

Explain how you use your home

Tell the person preparing the proposal about your household’s usual heating and hot-water routine, along with any changes you are planning. You do not need to choose equipment before that conversation.

Understand the proposed work

Ask for a clear explanation of the proposed installation and what is included. Useful questions include:

  • Which parts of the home would the work affect?
  • How would the appointment or installation days be arranged?
  • What preparation would you need to do beforehand?
  • Who would be your contact during the project?
  • What information would be handed over afterwards?

Keep the details together

Save the written proposal, the questions you asked and the answers you received. If you are considering more than one proposal, checking the included work side by side can make the differences easier to understand.

The useful proposal is the one you can read, understand and ask questions about.

Take time for the handover

Ask how the controls will be explained to you and where to find the documentation afterwards. A clear handover makes it easier to know who to contact if you have a question later.
