Preparing your home for a heating engineer’s visit

There is no need for an elaborate checklist before a heating appointment. A few practical arrangements can help you and the engineer make the most of the time set aside.

Make access straightforward

Let the business know about gates, entry systems or parking arrangements when you book. If someone else will be at home for the appointment, make sure they have the booking details too.

Ask in advance which areas the engineer expects to need access to, then move everyday belongings out of the way where practical.

Write down what you want to discuss

It can be surprisingly easy to forget a question once a visit is under way. Keep a short note on your phone or a piece of paper.

  1. What prompted you to arrange the appointment?
  2. When did you first notice the issue or start planning the work?
  3. What would you like the engineer to explain before leaving?

Keep everyone in the loop

If you rent your home, check the arrangements with the person responsible for organising the visit. If the appointment needs to change, contact the business as soon as you can.

After the visit

Save any notes, quotations or follow-up details in one place. That gives you an easy reference if you need to ask another question later.
